The URBACT Thematic Network Creative Clusters will launch its project in Óbidos (Portugal) in the Auditório Municipal da Casa da Música, on 21-23 January 2009 during a conference entitled "Creative Clusters in Small Urban Centers: Challenges and Opportunities". This event will be followed by the 1st Creative mayor's summit "Small Cities for Creativity" which will take place in  the Óbidos municipal Museum.

The starting assumption of the Creative Clusters project is that creativity can act as a driving force for economic development of small urban centres. It aims to transfer a range of so far considered urban attributes (accessibility, cultural life, technological facilities, competitive clusters, global networking, etc.) to middle-sized and small towns. Thus, Creative Clusters' launching conference is taking place in the framework of the 2009 European year of creativity and innovation. It  will be opened by Telmo Faria - Mayor of Óbidos and Alfredo Marques – President of CCDR-C – Regional Coordination Commission of the Centre Region. Raffaele Barbato, URBACT Project Officer will also attend the event. The conference will deal with Creativity and Innovation in Europe, Creativity in Small and Medium-Sized Urban Centres but also Local Policies for Innovation and Creativity in Portugal and in Europe. General Debate and Discussions will also be on the agenda. The end of the day will be dedicated to the 1st Creative Mayors' Summit: Small Cities for Creativity. A round table with Mayors: "Small Urban Economies in the Globalisation: the Role of Creativity-based models" will be organized and the Declaration of Óbidos will be signed by the Mayors and political representatives attending.
