9TH PEER REVIEW SESSION IN SÖDERTӒLJE 12-13 DECEMBER 2014
Edited on
05 February 2015In her introductory speech, the Mayor of Södertalje named the high proportion of immigrants within the city’s population as the key issue from the future development point of view. This is in line with the subject of the URBACT project, as Fornhöjden - the target area for the RE-Block project – is one of the residential areas where the majority (around 75%) of the population living in a large housing estate have foreign origin. The comprehensive briefing note for partners was supplemented by presentations informing the Project Partners about new Comprehensive Plan for Södertalje, the institutional set up for urban development and detailed information on Fornhöjden from built and social environment point of view.
STRENGTHS
- 2 out of 5 housing companies are going to renovate their housing stock and construct new flats
- The new comprehensive plan creates the framework for increasing the density of the city, and reduce the peripheral situation of Fornhöjden
- Strong network of people and organisations wanting to work together on improving living standards in the area including the Fornhöjden District Group and the Tenants Association
- Committed professionals working for the educational institutions in Fornhöjden
- The city is characterised by strong entrepreneurial spirit and business initiatives
The site visit in the target area gave the chance for the participants:
- to meet the people in the Youth Centre and talk with them about role and services of the centre and also about the working relationships with other similar organisations
- to visit a block of flats and talk about the planned refurbishment and new construction of flats to offer a wider variety
- to meet the representative of the Tennant Association
- to play the URBAN GAME (governance and power levels) designed by Mr Evert Kroes, Regional planning department
Once the Knowledge Ambassadors delegated by partners to the Södertalje Peer Review Session learnt about the main issues at the Fornhöjden area they presented relevant good practices from Malaga (participatory approach and communication campaign to change poor image), Gelsenkirchen (multilevel governance, self-assessment techniques, branding), Iasi (social inclusion) and LE (political commitment, awareness raising of environmental issues, learning from own experiences).
