Botkyrka

Botkyrka is the fifth biggest municipality in the Stockholm county, and ranks number 23 in Sweden. Botkyrka is one of Sweden’s most international municipalities with more than 100 different nationalities represented. It is also a very young municipality, wether one takes into account the average age of the population (37 years), or observes the rapid change from the quiet countryside landscape of the 1960s, to the present agglomerates of densely populated suburbs connected to the city centre of Stockholm through underground and commuter trains.   The municipality is in constant social change, due to international migration, and to its peripheral position within a growing metropolitan area.Further information is available on Local Coordinator : Ingrid RAMBERG Botkyrka municipality +46 8 531 706 32 +46 70 886 45 83

For years, Botkyrka municipality has put a great emphasis on measuring and following-up on the state of affairs in the municipality. From basic statistics on housing, health, education, employment, to more subjective data on levels of satisfaction with living conditions or with public services offered by the municipality, the municipality does its own yearly surveys. In parallel to this there are also a number of regional and national surveys that on a regular basis collect data on special issues and within special target groups. Through the Multicultural Centre, the municipality has also sponsored several research studies related to the field.

In a dialogue with both inhabitants and other stake-holders, the municipality has initiated a systematic process to formulate “future plans” for all six districts of the municipality. The contents of these plans will be connected to both yearly activity plans and those that are drawn up with a five year perspective. Botkyrka’s participation in the Together network is tied to the further development and evaluation of these future plans.

Key points addressed
The basis will consist of the five objectives formulated in the development programme for Alby:
• Ensuring a decent setting for girls and boys to grow up in
• Improving the employment opportunities of women and men
• Renewing the urban environment
• Modernising Alby’s identity
• Trying out new working methods within the municipality

These objectives were developed in an earlier dialogue with the inhabitants and stake holders in Alby and they will be further elaborated and tested within the framework of the network.
