But the challenges of brownfield recycling are not minimized. The structural change in economy, but also the military conversion process, are going further. So today there exist more than 30 000 ha of brownfields in NRW. But in the 80s it was the problem of big sites of coal and steel industry. Today they come from all industries, from retail and housing, have been school buildings or swimming pools. They are smaller, but have very different history.
So we have to develop new instruments to re-use also these sites in a more strategic way, we have to use the competence and the money of the owners. NRW.URBAN makes a pilot study for these instruments and wants to discuss these new instruments with the European partners in the BRING – Project and wants to test the instrument in other European cities. We want to start also cooperation between our local network (10 cities in NRW are our partners in the pilot-study) and the partners in BRING
