Cesena

Cesena is a vibrant city of 96.969 inhabitants, located in the Emilia Romagna Region, Italy. With an umbro-etruscan origins the city knew a moment of prosperity with the Malatesta family (1378-1465) who gave to the town centre the present shape and the superb Malatestiana Library UNESCO heritage. Cesena has a long tradition as a manufacturing center specialised in the agro-industrial sector. In the last 15 years the political agenda has focused on sustainability and social innovation to face the new urban challenges such as climate change, and to increase the well-being of citizens and revitalise the local market. Thanks to the quality of its urban public spaces and the vibrant cultural agenda combined with the beauty of the surrounding hilly landscape, the presence of tourists increased in the last years.

Cesena it’s one of the smaller cities in the region but still boasts a great range of tourist attractions thanks to its position near the beautiful Adriatic coastal towns such as Rimini, and Cesenatico and the Casentinesi Forests Natural Park with its mountains and villages. The Cesena’s urban political agenda has, at its center, the active role of citizens to build an urban community capable of co-designing the future city public spaces, through participatory processes and open innovation policies. Sustainable mobility, Climate resilience, promotion of cultural heritage through the use of ICT, innovative entrepreneurship are political priorities for the near future.

The main challenge for Cesena is therefore to enlarge the attractive and vital area of the old city center also to the peripheral areas characterized by urban decay, to test, transfer and develop innovative urban approaches and attractiveness models.

The KAIROS project is a great opportunity to invest and focus on new cultural tangible and in-tangible heritages to increase the attractiveness of the urban area of the railway station through a participatory process of urban regeneration that puts at the center the industrial
