Corfù

Corfu is one of the north islands of Ionian Sea. It is located at the entrance of Adriatic Sea near the continental coast. The northeastern coast is close to Sarande coastline in Albania. The coastline of the island has a total length of 217 kilometers. The terrain is mostly mountainous, particularly in the north.Corfu Town is the capital of the Prefecture of Corfu and one of the oldest cities in Greece. The Municipality of Corfu is the first municipality founded in Corfu island and the larger in population. It includes the old Venetian town of Corfu, the new city, the area Koulina, the former communities “Kanalia”, “Alepou”, “Evropouli”, “Potamos”, “Kontokali”, “Gouvia”, and villages “Kyra Chrisikou” and “Temploni”. According to the latest census (2001) the (actual) population of the Municipality of Corfu is 39.487 inhabitants.

Corfu’s historical centre with its two Venetian fortresses and its historical ports, is not only an important well preserved historic monument but also a place of unique natural beauty. On its present location, it is uninterruptedly inhabited for at least 1400 years and in nowadays the historical centre, houses in its over aged buildings, a minimum number of 10.000 inhabitants.

The redaction of the Management Plan in the year 2005 set for the first time the main issues to meet to develop a sustainable management for the protection and the preservation of the monument. Due to various reasons the Management Plan has not yet found a way for its full application, mostly because of conflicts between decision makers and other complexities. Municipality of Corfu sees the possibility, as a partner on the HISTORICCENTRES_NET project, to develop initiatives, which will lead to the formation of a strategy for the application of the Plan’s main actions concerning the sustainable urban management of the Site.

The main subjects being worked on at local level concern:

  • Preservation of the inhabitant’s life quality in the historic centre in association with social economic regeneration and improvement of urban functions.
  •  Visitor’s management in association with the preservation of the residential character of the historic town.
  • Feasible and sustainable scenarios for citizens to have important role on social based interventions.

As a result of the proposed application strategies, our Municipality intends to implement on a workout base a number of sustainable actions on a selected district of the historic centre. All the actions will be monitored and revaluated with the final goal to issue a number of implementation norms, which will be applied on Corfu city’s Master Plan and Urban Plan.
