'Local Authorities and Development' theme for 3rd European Development Days

25 June 2019Under the French Presidency of the European Union, the European Commission, in cooperation with the European Parliament, is organising the third European Development Days (EDD) in Strasbourg from 15 to 17 November 2008. The central theme of this major event this year will be 'local authorities and development'. In conjunction with this, the European Commissioner for Development, Louis Michel, is inviting local and regional authorities throughout the EU to share their experience in decentralised cooperation with developing countries and to conclude new twinning covenants.

Hosting each year some 3000 participants from every continent, representing over 1200 organisations in the development community, the third edition of the European Development Days will be held at the Strasbourg Music and Conference Centre from 15 to 17 November 2008. By breaking down walls between different issues, the European Development Days serve as a natural platform for debating the major issues of development cooperation and launching new initiatives. Following the EDD events in 2006 in Brussels dealing with governance and in 2007 in Lisboa on climate change, this third edition of the event will focus on the role of local authorities and the local dimension to development. According to Commissioner Louis Michel 'Local action and international action are two sides of the same impetus for development. The European Development Days 2008 will put forward new ideas, based on the premise that local action is indispensable if our development effort is to succeed.' A number of European local authorities have already launched development projects with often positive results. Commissioner Michel is now calling on many more local and regional authorities to identify twinning schemes with their counterparts in developing countries and send their proposals to the European Commission by 20 September 2008. The selected participants will be invited to attend the European Development Days to take place in Strasbourg 15-17 November 2008 and participate in a signing ceremony. Projects already funded by the European Commission are excluded. An independent jury made up of representatives of the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions will examine the twinning projects submitted.
