The University of Karlsruhe and National Research Centre of Karlsruhe as one of the biggest science and engineering research institutions in Europe is merging to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). With roundabout 8000 employees and an annual budget of about 700 million Euros, KIT is becoming a leading institution in selected science disciplines in the world. The Institute of Urban and Regional Planning (ISL) is a subdivision of the Department of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences. The institute focuses among others on the following topics: significance and challenges of local and regional spatial planning; management and Infrastructure planning; planning strategies and methods; EDP-based instruments of spatial planning; project management; congresses on particularly important questions of spatial planning.

Situation
Until now, there a lot of cities, NGOs, multipliers and networks working on the task of land use management on a technical and sectoral level perspective. Coordination and cooperation between these networks in form of a “networking networks” approach is still missing.

Topics and Challenges
The linking of the existing networks with the instrument of the development of new common products and projects and with the effect of a common development of competences.Collecting good practices but also problems of sustainable land use management systems and developing indicators and criteria for good and best practices; especially focusing on Public Private Partnership (PPP).Developing methods and techniques for the improvement and the adaptation on partner level what existing sustainable land use management systems are concerned.Special focus on private actors on local level, for instance from the real estate development companies.

Contribution
On the methodological side, the University of Karlsruhe has a lot of experience and competence in land use management and local and regional context as well as in it’s governance structures and in involving private investors. Besides, the University is competent in network formation and network management.
