The City of Gliwice is located in the south-western part of Poland, in the Silesian old-industrialised mining region. Gliwice has a population of 192,726 inhabitans.
The main industry sectors and clusters are: services, car and automotive components industry. Furthermore aviation, energy and enviromental engerneering, biotechnologies and medical equipment are considered potential fields of clustering. Recent economic changes have proven the importance of SME activities in the local economy. At this time SMEs make up 99% of all companies registered in Gliwice.
Gliwice has created an entrepreneurship and technology incubator, a further technology incubator as well as a school for entrepreneurship planned to be opened in spring 2009. But it is as well still facing some challenges: Within the City of Gliwice there is the strong challenge of making SMEs more conscious of being linked locally. This is crucial to enrich cooperative structures between the SMEs and key actors of economic development to enhance them to act more actively in a process of local development.
