Active NGOs project brought POP UP NGO Houses in Espoo (FI)
Edited on
03 March 2020During the autumn 2019 in three neighbourhoods local NGOs got together and created a nice space for residents to learn about NGO activities in their area inspired by participation in ACTive NGOs project. The idea was also to test how creating a moving POP UP NGO House will work. Local NGOs were keen to take part in the experiment.
The first POP UP NGO House rise to Espoon keskus (Espoo centre). The location of the “House” was a covered train station bridge - with International Livingroom Trapesa as a home base. Recycled fabrics were placed into the ground as carpets, tables set, balloons blown and serpentine hang. This place was chosen because it is busy with people. The passers-by could build an NGO House of their dream from Legos. The feedback from residents was very positive.
“It is nice that someone brings some life to this place!” one lady said.
The second NGO House was built in premises of Via Dia Espoo, an NGO located in the Leppävaara neighbourhood. The place can be found along a promenade. Many people pass by it. Yellow balloons and free coffee sign were but outside to attract attention. About 50 people popped in during the sunny afternoon - many of whom had never even noticed the place before.
The third POP UP NGO House was created in Matinkylä during the Market of Opportunities event. The event was held in a shopping center Iso Omena and the theme for the event was Peace. A big part of the event is multicultural program; music, dance and singing. Numerous NGOs presented their activities and organized workshops. Especially the Lego of the NGO House table was very popular. About 200 people visited the market during only 4 hours.
As a result of this experiment one can say that it is surprisingly easy to build an interesting but safe place. One only needs some cosy decorations and roof above one’s head. Even a shade will suffice. And of course, welcoming and enthusiastic people from NGOs.
