Nea Propontida

Municipality of Nea Propontida is located at Perfecture of Halkidiki, in the Region of Central Macedonia in Northern Greece. Its territory covers 371 km2 and is constituted by 20 Communities. It has three urban centers: Nea Moudania, Nea Kallikrateia and Nea Triglia. The city of Nea Moudania is municipality's major urban and administrative center, inhabited by 10.000 people. The total population of Nea Propontida is about 40.000 (permanent inhabitants) but during summer reaches up to 300.000 inhabitants. Geographically, Nea Propontida is located by the sea with a coastal front of 60km long. The micro-climate of the area is hot and dry, with very sparse rainfall.

Municipality's local economy could be described as rural, semi-urban and is mainly related to the following sectors: Tourism, Agriculture, Livestock Production, Commerce/Business and Fishery. Tourism is a key sector for the development or the area: hotels, medium and small companies/enterprises of tourist interest (or tourist orientated), a yacht marine-port. There is a booming in business activity mostly in coastal zone during late spring and summer time. The agriculture sector concerns the cultivation of olive trees, grapes, apricots, wheat (durum wheat), peanuts and vegetables. Livestock Production includes the breeding of goats and sheep, cows and pigs. There are 4 fishing shelters, the biggest of which -and one of the largest in Northern Greece- is located in Nea Moudania.

The main attractions of the city are (a) The “Cave of Petralona”, especially for the Scalp of Homo Erectus, which is considered to be one of the oldest in Europe (b) The Prehistoric Settlement of the area near Agios Mamas town (c) The Wall Partitions of Kassandeia (classical and Hellenistic era) in the area of Nea Potidaia town (d) The ruins of the Byzantine Settlement of Vergia near Sozopoli settlement (e) The well preserved Byzantine building located in Nea Flogita town.

Participating in the “BEEPATHNET' Transfer Network, the city of Nea Propontida together with its stakeholders, intends to further develop the existing long tradition of beekeeping. The Urbact local group members are also passionate and eager to explore potentials for diversification of bee-products and services. Joining BeePathNet project, it will enable us to explore all stated opportunities based on experiences, best practices and already proven solutions from the city of Ljubljana.
