Mula
The municipality of Mula has a population of 16.790 inhabitants and is located in the Region of Murcia in southeastern Spain at some 30 km from its capital Murcia. It is well connected to the rest of the country via an excellent highway system.
Situated along the flanks of a rocky hill formation crowned by a medieval castle, the city features a number of interesting historic monuments and mansions and is part of two UNESCO World Heritage sites. It also houses the largest single collection of Iberian art in Spain proceeding from local excavations.
Its economy is primarily based on agriculture, food processing industries and ancillary services. Tourism is slowly taking off.
All good reasons for the city of Mula to actively seek resources and promote policies focusing on the needed regeneration of the often degraded areas where its cultural heritage is concentrated. Cultural and natural heritage then as a tool for urban revitalization, social inclusion and economic growth. Assuming the leadership of the URBACT III Kairós project, the city also assumes a commitment to an integrated and sustainable urban redevelopment plan which will lead to its ultimate goal: refurbished neighborhoods, a gratifying social environment for its citizens and an inviting place to visit for tourists, converging into new opportunities for economic growth and general wellbeing for the whole community. As leader of the Kairós network the city of Mula supports and is actively engaged in the enriching transnational exchange with its seven European partners and in the generation of a common methodology to address the challenges they all share.
