Medway

Medway sits on the River from which it takes its name and is located 50 km south east of London and 75 km from the port of Dover. 1998 the five towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham were incorporated, with several smaller villages, to form a unitary authority called Medway Council. This diverse multi-cultural area has grown into the largest urban area in South East England outside London.

The principal challenge for Medway Council today is to deliver SUSTAINABLE urban development to satisfy the needs of this multi-cultural community, enabling it to become a place where all people can experience a good quality of life, have access to local employment, enjoy a high quality physical environment and have access to good quality affordable housing.

Medway's involvement in the SUITE project is seen as a way to learn from other European cities how they have addressed the subject of Social Mix and affordable housing.
