Mr. João Medina has extensive experience in the design and delivery of transnational exchange and learning activities, and has promoted working relationships among different stakeholders, not only at the national level, but also at the European and worldwide level.
Mr. João Medina has promoted working dynamic relationships among different stakeholders for more than 20 years, namely during the coordination of Strategic Urban Development Plans for many municipalities in Portugal.
Mr. João Medina has also been an expert member in the European Commission's for Regional and Urban Policy (DG Region) in the area of urban development since 2013. In this context, Mr. João Medina deals with different companies and entities from various countries, gathering important information in the area of urban development.
Mr. João Medina has also participated in various worldwide projects, such as the Training Program for Incubator Managers of World Bank Companies, and in many H2020 projects (e.g., PoliRural, Bingo Project, ENRICH China, URBAN GreenUP, SPARCS). In these projects, Mr. João Medina always promotes an effective stakeholder engagement through different methods and tools, namely training sessions, online interactive tools, surveys, research fiches, among others.

E.1. Knowledge on participatory methods and tools for co-production and implementation of local polices :
As an example, Mr. Medina coordenated the design and delivery of participatory methods was the development os the smart specialization strategy of the Azores Region, in Portugal. This project followed the approach of the "entrepreneurial discovery process". This was an inclusive and interactive bottom-up process in which participants from different environments (policy, business, academia, etc) were challenged to participate in the identification of potential new activities and potential opportunities that emerge through this interaction.
This process included the development of meetings, workshops and seminars with interactive and participative methodologies.
The same kind of approach, but at urban scale, was developed in several urban renewal and urban deveopment strategies that I coordenated.
E.2. Knowledge on integrated approach for the design, delivering, monitoring and evaluation of urban strategies/policies:
João Medina may highlight his experience in integrated approach for the design, delivering, monitoring and evaluation of urban strategies/policie in different cities in, mainly in the north of Portugal.
It may be highlighted the strategy for urban renewal of the City of Porto "East end" (Estratégia de Reabilitação Urbana de Campanhã), for Gondomar Historical Center, for Bragança Historical Center, amongst other. These imlplied the involvment of several local stakeholders ans external thematic experts in areas such as mobility, cohesion, enviornment, architecture, planning, in order to build the appropriate strategy for each area.
E.3. Awareness of the main policy and funding schemes for sustainable urban development at EU and national level:
The experience with portuguese municipalities included the identification of sources for financing at national and european level. This includes the "hands-on" experience of developing aplications for different programmes. At national level it can be highlighted the Regional Opeation Programmes (mainly PO Norte - more than 20 applications), and The Thematic Operational Programmes (mainly PO SEUR - related with sustainability and efficient use of resources).
At european level it may be highlighted the experience in Horizon 2020 wehre Mr. Medina is involved in several projects that directly support innovative projects that include urban actors. Mr. Medina coordinates SPI participation in Urban Green-up (focused in the implementation of nature-based solutions ein urban enviornments) and in SPARCS (focused in energy efficiency in urban environments).
Furthermore, Mr. Medina supported the municipilaity of Bragança in its application to the Urbact Programme (Find Your Greatness).
E.4. Ability to understand specific local situations and adapt tools and content to different local realities:
Mr. Medina is an experienced international consultant. The capacity to adapt tools and content to different local realities may be demonstrated through its experience in EU countries and worlswide in counties such as Angola, China or Brazil, where the need for adaptation is fundamental for success.

Working in SPI since 2000, Mr. Medina manages the Urban and Territorial Development team of the company.
Mr. Medina coordinates projects covering a wide range of areas including: regional development, regional innovation, smart specialization, urban renewal, urban development, land planning, climate change adaptation, tourism, territorial marketing, climate change, social inclusion, housing, cluster development, entrepreneurial ecosystems, business incubation, amongst others.
By having been based in Angola during 2009, in China in 2007, in the USA in 2000, and by having developed several consultancy projects in countries such as Brazil or Mozambique, Mr. Medina acquired an extensive international experience and proved ability to adapt to multicultural environments.
Mr. Medina received his major in Industrial Management and Engineering (five-year diploma) from the University of Porto, Portugal in 2000. In 2007 received his MSc in Urban and Environmental Planning, having developed his thesis on The impacts of Regional Innovation Strategies on Competitiveness in Portugal.
