09 December 2020UK sustainability organisation, Julie’s Bicycle, established its ‘Creative Green Awards’ programme in 2017 to celebrate and showcase the arts and culture sector’s leadership in climate action.
The Programme has several award categories: Outstanding Achievement; Best Newcomer; Highest Achievement for Commitment; Highest Achievement for Understanding; and Highest Commitment for Improvement and Creative Green Champions. Two new open categories were added to the 2020 programme - Best Campaign and Best Creative Programming. Manchester representatives were nominated in two categories.
At the virtual award ceremony on 13th November, Helen Harland from Manchester City Council’s Events Team, was awarded Creative Green Champion. This award honours individuals who have led and inspired change from within their organisations and beyond. In Helen’s case, this was for her work on the Manchester Day event, along with her role co-ordinating an events sustainability working group supporting Manchester’s Zero Carbon Framework for 2020-2038.
The Manchester Day event is delivered by local outdoor arts organisation ‘Walk The Plank’ (walktheplank.co.uk). This organisation was also one of the Pilot Action Programme projects selected as part of the C-Change project in Manchester. C-Change is an URBACT Good Practice Network and its pilot action programme provided seed funding to arts and culture organisations to create a piece of work that will educate and influence behaviour change in relation to climate action.
Helen Harland, accepting the award said, “This is really great recognition for the collective hard work going on in Manchester which we are continuing to push ahead with, ready for 2021.”
Also nominated was the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester under the Best Creative Programming Award for ‘The Den & Local Exchange’. The Den is the Royal Exchange’s new super-low carbon, pop-up 180-seat theatre, made of sustainable materials and designed to be built and dismantled with communities across Greater Manchester. Like the Royal Exchange, it is a space-within-a-space, where people can share, learn and make theatre. It is part of Local Exchange – which sees the theatre resident in communities across Greater Manchester. The project has been made possible by the generous support of the Oglesby Charitable Trust.

Background info:
Creative Green is a Julie’s Bicycle programme that offers a broad range of services that help organisations scope, understand, prioritise and advocate environmentally sustainable practices.
A core part of this programme is the Creative Green Certification Scheme, which enables organisations to begin their sustainability journey, demonstrating best practice and leadership. The certification is a framework for sustainability action, representing a community of pioneering cultural organisations that are driving change.
With 400 certificates awarded since its launch in 2009, Creative Green remains the only environmental certification designed specifically for the arts and cultural sector. It supports organisations’ to reduce their environmental impact through three strands: commitment; understanding and improvement.
