Linz
As the regional capital of Upper Austria, Linz is located at the Danube river and immediatley linked to some 30 smaller towns and districts. The City of Linz has a population of approx. 190.000 inhabitants on an area of around 96 km. The Linz conurbation has a population of approx. 400,000 inhabitants. With exception of the Viennese area, the Linz conurbation constitutes Austria's most important economic center.
The region's key industries are metal production and processing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, mechanical engineering, IT and food production. Around 85% of the city's companies have fewer than 20 employees and only approx. 4,5% have more than 100 workers. This extensive distribution indicates the importance of SME structure for Linz as an economic location. Linz is candidate of the European capital culture in the year 2009, focussing on creation and development of creative and innovative industries economy.
Around 30,000 people are employed in some 2,000 "creative economy" companies within the city region. Financial and non-financial support instruments are of high importance to increase the number of start-ups and successful development. Thus, the city of Linz seeks to provide local SMEs with better access to markets, good logistic links, co-operation networks ( organised clusters), market research partners, etc.
