Karlskrona

Karlskrona was founded in 1680 as a model city for the main naval base of Sweden this entailed moving most of the naval fleet from Stockholm to the newly conquered Danish province of Blekinge. The State was the dominant force and employer for centuries until democracy and industrialization made local political management legal and possible.

Karlskrona Kommun has a strategy of developing the built environment located between the university and the city centre into a university campus area. This will entail regeneration and transformation projects promoted jointly by the university, municipality and employers, resulting in a triple helix approach.

The detailed development plan will deal with questions of preserving historic buildings and the idea is to retain a couple of characteristic buildings for the future with respect to its technical heritage. It is expected that this attractive site location between university and city centre will certainly help to focus attention on sustainable energy methods, transportation and will develop local jobs for local people.
