The startup story of Debrecen has started with a simple step: change the point of view of the local entrepreneur community. The Debrecen Bár blog was the pioneer, which discussed mainly entrepreneurial and international career related issues. It had a beautiful engage (10.000 viewers/month) and then came the interpersonal side of the plan.

In Debrecen a lot of events and communities grew up from this community. You can find here meetings with basic topics (Pár-Beszéd Est, Bagoly Klub), IT focused meetup (DebTech Meetup), internationally renowned brands, like TED (TEDxNagyerdő) and a free business happening where the main actor is the beer  (Business & Beer).

This programme is the only business talk show and networking event series in Debrecen. “The formula is simple. We inspire both the audience and the guests of the talk show. The guests are SME (small and medium sized companies) managers and owners, who has considerable knowledge to share, and their success stories needs more visibility to motivate us. Meanwhile, the audience learns a lot at the talk show and has fun on the events.” – says Laszlo Suvoltos, Founder of Business and Beer.

In the next step the community has educated the startupers. We adopted a successful method from Budapest. It was the !gen Debrecen, which is a 3 months training program ending with a pitch competition for possible investors.

What is also necessary to enhance this ecosystem? Co-working offices.

Debrecen HUB was the first of the row. Eight month after launching it, the second co-working office (Xponential) has opened with large investors in the background.

In the heart of Debrecen at an inspiring place they are open for entrepreneurs, freelancers and even teams to develop great ideas and make them happen.

Let’s check them in this video

In this system we (EDC Debrecen) organize the Startup Roundtable, which is aiming to be a connection point for startups, where they can discuss various topics, give advices to each other, and also organize events together.

Finally, we would like to share with you a very special map. The Forbes Hungary made a map about Debrecen’s Startup System. Let’s check it out!
