Halle (Saale)

The City of Halle (Saale) has around 230,000 inhabitants and is thus the most populous city in Saxony-Anhalt. Its historical architecture from various eras remained nearly untouched by the war. Halle has a university which is over 500 years old and it became the seat of the German Academy of Scienaces Leopoldina a few weeks ago. It was once a main centre of the Middle German chemical industry, however since the German Reunification, Halle has developed into a city whose future lies in technology – future technologies, media and services.

Over the years the City of Halle developed a Science and Media District situated between the city centre and the Saale River. Challenges which the city would like to tackle with this project are, the demands on the infrastructure from a traffic point of view, closing the gaps between buildings in the "Spitze" district, development of non-modernised office and residential buildings and last but not least, starting the ball rolling for a centre of the humanities in the city centre. Biggest concrete action of City of Halle was the construction of the Middle German Multi-Media Centre (MMZ). Science, education and business are united under its roof. The creative milieu needed room to expand, a creative district, where science, creativity and business could find each other again. Here, numerous projects are in the pipeline which are creating new synergies between various businesses, start-up companies and even students. The MMZ was completely full to capacity shortly after its official opening in summer 2007. Expectations for this project include an international exchange of ideas. The City of Halle can profit from the experience of other EU cities which it can use in the further development of its science district.
