B.1. Understanding of integrated and sustainable urban development:
I studied at the University of Ferrara, when prof. Paolo Ceccarelli was the Dean, former teacher at ILAUD and currently UNESCO Chair on Urban and Regional Planning for Sustainable Local Development. He gave a precise orientation to our students' education towards a “social and sustainable architecture”. After my degree I collaborated with him to an ILAUD research on Ferrara's ancient city center about the sustainable urban development of small university towns. My research doctorate was characterized by a trans-disciplinary field of study that investigated housing in a holistic perspective, aimed at understanding the social, urban and design aspects of the built environment. For several years, I have been teaching Architectural Design courses at the University, where the sustainability (from an economic, social and technological perspective) is an integral part of the program. Furthermore, my personal research, testified by my publications, focuses on the aspects of the housing sustainability (from the economic and social point of view), in particular with reference to collective and collaborative housing, a solution that more than any other pays attention to the residents' community sustainability and its integration into the welcoming society.
B.2. Understanding of exchange and learning processes at transnational level:
My experiences in the transnational field are mainly linked to the university courses I have been carrying out for many years. My students come from Italy as well as from many different countries of the world: China, Arabia, Greece, Turkey, Canada, Portugal, France, Spain, Russia, Bulgaria, Mexico etc. A particular relationship is established between us, made up of mutual exchange and curiosity that becomes an integral part of the way of teaching and of the topics of the course, which cannot fail to found its pedagogical structure from the cultural features of the single student. My annual teachings with the American University of NYIT (2008 up today) are an ever-renewed experience of cultural exchange, as the international conferences I frequently have been able to attend are. Therefore, my experiences are linked to a direct exchange on-the-field, from the participation with people and communities belonging to different cultures.
B.3. Proficiency in English:
I started studying English at the elementary school, a didactic experiment, a rarity in Italy in 1970s. I continued in high school, I have always been fascinated by languages as well as being able to communicate a thought in a different language, to people from other countries, with different cultures and education. At 17 I attended an English course for foreign students at Berkeley University. The course ended with a TOEFL simulation which I passed with an excellent score (536/677). Since then, I have been always "working" with the English language, teaching to American students within their Summer School in Italy, and at the University, where I've been selected to teach Architecture courses in English to foreign students at Polytechnic of Turin, first, and Milan, later. I have no written certifications but the TOEFL simulation score result, as I never needed them before, but I use the English language almost daily. I can communicate a professional or everyday thought, an abstract concept or a theoretical and/or practical subject without problems and with a certain ease.
