The Greater Dunkirk Council
The Greater Dunkirk Council, consisting of 18 towns that stretch from Belgian border to Calais region, was created in 1969. Its current president is Michel Delebarre.
The Greater Dunkirk district is an industrial and seaport conurbation, marked by the establishment of an internationally important iron and steel centre in the 1960s. In the 2000’s, Dunkirk is one of the first energy platforms in Europe, due to its manufacturing infrastructures and to industrial needs.
A strategic geographical situation in the core of the Channel District within range of 5 Europeans capitals: London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Luxembourg.
Facing the ongoing economic restructuration the Greater Dunkerque council is challenged by
- Remaining industrial brownfield sites from the ship building industry of the 90th, underused harbor areas ,ongoing industrial restructurations
and derelict sites from railway infrastructure in central locations - Brownfields from the housing sector mainly in constructions of the post war period. Remediation and social coherence are challenged by
urban sprawl and “green field” completion on individual houses in the sub-region - Brownfields from small commercial sites – one of the biggest project of the Greater Council and the city of Dunkerque is to enhance the
center of the city in a commercial way in order to develop a new collective wealth. We use brownfields and deserted areas to build
attractiveness
