B.1. Understanding of integrated and sustainable urban development:
I have been working for twenty years in the field of integrated urban development which to me means looking at cities from different angles including the socio-cultural one. I started my career with a degree in Urban Sociology and then developed my skills with further training in urban studies, creative thinking applied to city policies and cultural policy related to urban regeneration. I have thought students at university level on the subject of holistic planning for many years. Since 1999 I have run my own consultancy working with cities and communities helping them to implement plans for the renewal of heritage sites, public spaces, and for transforming industrial buildings into creative spaces. I have also delivered many city branding strategies based on the notion of mapping the distinctive qualities of a place. My basic philosophy is that cities are living organisms where every function is connected, so every time we undertake a planning initiative we have to take into consideration the effects each action will have on the social, economic, cultural, as well as the physical sphere. In many projects I have worked with community groups taking the lead in implementing actions that met their needs and aspirations. This to me is what being sustainable is about.
B.2. Understanding of exchange and learning processes at transnational level:
In my role of lead expert for an Urbact II project (phase one only) I engaged in drafting the baseline study for each partner, collecting and presenting case studies, running thematic workshops for local actors and partners on themes such as: creativity and youth employment and the advantages of diversity. Advising lead partners on preparing further bids for funding and for phase two Urbact. In other expertise projects I delivered presentations to partners in their respective countries and and facilitated thematic workshops, as well as helping to draft coordinated actions plans. I have conducted internal monitoring exercises and evaluation exercises (both ex-ante and ex-post) of projects through either desk research or through visits to projects.

Expertise support to local authorities and other stakeholders in designing & delivering integrated and participatory policies
E.1. Knowledge on participatory methods and tools for co-production and implementation of local polices :
The creative industries mapping I have conducted for the local and regional authority in Zlin (CZ Republic in 2013) is a new way of assessing the potential of the creative industries in this city. During this process I mentored the stakeholders on the ground helping them to learn the methodology of mapping, I brought together focus groups with local practitioner and and delivered a report with recommendations relating to the measures the city and region need to implement to support the sector. I have done a similar process in at least 20 other consultancy projects conducted in the past ten years in countries such as Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Spain.
E.2. Knowledge on integrated approach for the design, delivering, monitoring and evaluation of urban strategies/policies:
Monitoring tools used for example in the Skaraborg (Sweden) cultural planning strategy are, for example, self reporting (written diaries) by municipal officers (e.g. from the cultural department) about how colleagues from other departments are changing attitudes towards culture in that city. Or participant observation where I personally attend council meetings and report back on implementation progress.
E.3. Awareness of the main policy and funding schemes for sustainable urban development at EU and national level:
I'm a member of organizations such as The Academy of Urbanism and the TCPA, both bodies deal with sustainable Urban development in the UK and outside. I have a twitter account which follows all major EU programmes related to urban development. I subscribe to electronic newsletters of international organisations working in culture and development.
E.4. Ability to understand specific local situations and adapt tools and content to different local realities:
I have developed a toolkit for the cultural mapping of places. This contains various techniques for both: qualitative and quantitative assessment of resources. In addition, the toolkit also contains examples of mechanisms of delivery on the ground which vary from trusts, to agencies, to community working groups. These tools are always adapted to the circumstances of each place. My website www.noema.org.uk has many examples of adaptation to locality.
