EcoFellows - Tampere

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland centre in the Nordic countries. Tampere is one of the three most rapidly developing regions in Finland. It is a centre of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business. Tampere’s city centre is surrounded by lake and ridge scenery, sited on an isthmus between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city. Currently there are 235 239 inhabitants in Tampere (year 2018), and close to half a million inhabitants in Tampere Region, which comprises Tampere and its neighbouring municipalities.

Economy:

Tampere has been an industrial pioneer in Finland since the very beginning with a paper and cotton industry. Tampere is still the centre of Finnish industry today. Versatile research and education and cooperation between companies and universities have maintained and further developed the competitiveness of the region’s industry. Main industries are professional, scientific and technological know-how.

Culture:

Tampere is the Sauna Capital of the world. We have the most public saunas per capita. Tampere is the most favoured travel destination for Finns in their home country. Numerous events, fascinating cultural experiences and soothing lake views to match the relaxed atmosphere makes the city very appealing to visit. There’s a lot of culture, congresses, nature, lakes, activities, great food, events and festivals all year round and Tampere is the home to the only Moomin Museum in the world.
