Every year, since 2002, the European Mobility Week is organised from 16 to 22 September. From 16 to 22 September 2008 the European cities and towns will have the opportunity to participate to the most widespread event on sustainable mobility. A full week of events dedicated to sustainable mobility will be organised in more than 2000 cities and towns.

"
Objectives This seventh edition dedicated to the thematic 'Clean air for all' will give the opportunity to initiate a wide range of activities and represents a platform for local authorities as well as organisations and associations.
The overall aim of the European Mobility Week campaign is to encourage public awareness of the need to act against pollution caused by the increase in motorised traffic in the urban environment. In fact, it is not just a question of fighting atmospheric pollution or noise but also of improving the quality of urban life. Accordingly, that operation is centred on three types of measures, designed to:

  • encourage the use of alternative forms of transport and travel other than private cars,
  • raise awareness and inform city-dwellers of what is at stake so far as concerns long-term mobility in towns and the risks connected with pollution,
  • show the town in another light thanks in particular to reduced motorised traffic within restricted areas.

In practical terms… It is an opportunity for all the participating towns to show how much environmental issues concern them. Each town or participating area implements its own 'In town without my car!' operation by mobilising as many citizens as possible as well as the socio-economic players such as, shopkeepers, companies, associations, educational establishments, etc. Several streets in the towns are closed to traffic: thus, one can rediscover the pleasure of walking around one's own town undisturbed. But it also enables comparative reports to be drawn up on air quality, noise pollution or the reduction of motor traffic during the operation and in the normal situation. The results are globally significant as they show considerable improvements in each of these areas. Who can participate? Official participants of the European Mobility Week are local authorities. The initiative is open to all cities and municipalities. They register as participants by signing the European Charter and agreeing by this to the main guidelines of the Week.
