The CoNet meeting in Gijón on 23 and 24 September discussed cooperation between the municipality and NGO. Looking at services and support for immigrants in Gijón the participants learned about Gijóns approach.
Gijón has a long tradition of cooperating with associations and NGOs. 1400 associations are registered with the municipality. Through local association councils 2% of the city budget are decided. Registered associations have access to the facilities in the well equiped Integrated Municipal Centres.
The Citizen Card (tarjeta ciudadana) is another interesting tool in Gijón. This card gives access to many Municipal Services from libraries to training and transport and is available to all people living in Gijón including immigrants.
