The European Commission announced today the cities selected to the group of 100 Climate-neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 – the city of Tampere is among them. The selection is part of the EU’s research and innovation programme Horizon Europe and its Cities Mission. 377 cities expressed their interest in becoming members of the group of 100 cities.
– We are proud to be part of this ambitious Cities Mission with a strong climate-neutral and smart focus. Although we have done a lot in Tampere to achieve climate-neutrality I’m convinced we can do more – together with the wider Cities mission community, says mayor of Tampere Anna-Kaisa Ikonen.
In the expression of interest the city of Tampere stated its ambition of becoming climate-neutral by 2030 as part of the mission, submitting information on the city’s current situation, future plans and ambitions with regard to climate neutrality in early 2022. Tampere’s ambitions are well aligned with the objectives of the cities mission. It will support the city reach its 2030 goal of being a climate-neutral city.
The city will receive support for drawing an investment plan as part of the Climate City Contract - an essential tool of the mission - and improving citizen engagement. The city is also ready to share its good practices and exchange with the Cities mission community, helping to advance the mission’s targets.
Being part of the 100 cities group has a number of benefits such as: getting access to tailor-made advice and assistance from “Mission Platform" for developing an Investment Plan, unlocking additional funding and financing opportunities, funding opportunities for cities in pilot project and demonstrators, support through a national coordination network, networking and learning opportunities among cities, involvement of citizens and local communities and good visibility, raising political profile and attractiveness.
