City lab #2 – how are cities putting sustainable urban development into practice?
URBACT is organising a City Lab exploring the practical ways cities understand and implement the concept of sustainable urban development. This is the second in a series of URBACT City Labs exploring the state of play on integrated sustainable urban development in Europe.
The lab will examine the principles of sustainability in urban development, how cities tackle the challenges of air quality and mobility, energy and climate adaptation, and the growing role of food policy.
In addition to bringing experienced voices from practitioners and policy makers across Europe, the lab will also include a deep dive into some of the sustainable practices currently implemented in Brussels relating to food policy.
The Brussels City Lab is designed as an interactive exchange which aims to generate clear recommendations for cities and those involved in urban decision-making. There will be active representation from cities of all sizes from across Europe, as well as from the European Commission and Member State Governments.
Collaboration with EUROCITIES and the Urban Innovative Actions initiative will also ensure a healthy cross-section of elected representatives and those involved in delivery of actions on the ground.
The outcomes of this lab will feed directly into the renewal of the Leipzig Charter for sustainable urban development. URBACT is working closely with the German Presidency team for 2020 and EUKN to ensure the city perspective in this important work.

The URBACT Knowledge Hub brings together good practices and lessons learned from cities to share with all professionals involved in urban policy throughout Europe. The work programme on exploring city application of Integrated and Participatory urban development concepts began in September 2018 and runs until 2020. A series of practical City Labs explore the technical and policy developments in European cities, and formulate recommendations to overcome barriers. This work is aligned with the German EU Presidency 2020 process to renew the Leipzig Charter for sustainable urban development, bringing city experiences to the reflection.
