Charente-Maritime

The Department of Charente-Maritime has 48 fortifications in total, 26 are owned by district authorities and 8 owned by the French Navy. The remainder belong to the coastal conservation department, the ministry of culture, or the ministry of transport and infrastructure. The city of Hiers Brouage is a small city with a fortified town appeared in 1555 as a centre of salt trade and sits at the heart of this area.(

Charente Maritime Department can use the citadel of Brouage as an example. The development of tourism proposes different products through the promotion of a cultural site (exhibition centre, educational activities, theatre and performances...)

A project lead by the public and private sector in the citadel of Brouage aims to find a modern method of energy production (photovoltaic) to light up the citadel. This kind of project will be studied when we will work with partners in this theme to learn from their experience.

In addition, the Department of Charente Maritime has a new global transportation plan which aims to use all the different modes of transport. One of the objectives could be to connect the major military sites into the department as Brouage and other touristic zones located in marshland or protected areas. Furthermore the department is developing cycle and walking routes.

Charente-Maritime expects to share good practice with the partners and learn from their experience
