Cardiff
Cardiff is the capital of Wales and the UK’s 11th largest city and has a population of approximately 360,000. The city economy is demonstrating strong performance across a number of headline indicators, with jobs growth up, unemployment down, visitor numbers up and growth in the number of new companies created. Cardiff has a long history of international migration and has even been dubbed the ‘birthplace of multiculturalism’, owing to its super diverse docks area.
Cardiff is a member of the ‘Rumourless Cities’ URBACT III Transfer Network. The Transfer Network focuses on the development of local anti-rumours strategies to address misconceptions and stereotypes concerning migrant and minority groups, transferring best practice from the lead city of Amadora, Portugal.
With migration flows continuing to be a feature of the new policy context that many cities are facing, addressing these forms of prejudice is integral to our vision of a cohesive and more equal Cardiff. In 2019, approximately 16% of Cardiff residents, 57,600 people, were born outside of the UK, and over 100 languages are spoken in the city. ‘Rumourless Cities’ will add value, resource and expertise to the development of the city’s local migration narrative, helping the city to consistently highlight the ways migration has enriched Cardiff.
