Bialystok

Bialystok, with a population of almost 300.000, is a city located in the north-east of Poland, serving the function of the capital of Podlaskie province. Bialystok was granted the city charter in 1692, however, it was confirmed only in 1749 by king August the 3rd Saxon under the Magdeburg Law. Bialystoks neighboring countries are Belarus, Lithuania and Russia. The city bridges the relations between eastern and western European countries. Polands entry into the European Union has opened new prospects of development.

The City of Bialystok is the capital of Podlaskie Voivodeship and the administrative, scientific, economical and cultural centre. Local problems:

  • very high but not fully taped potential of science units (5 public and 5 private universities)
  • notable breaking up of support organizations
  • low level of innovativeness of local employers maladjustment to standards of modern economy infrastructural and financial problems in the field of competitiveness and innovation
  • lack of cooperation within the region (e.g. transfer of technologies, innovation) prevents the progress

There exist a high necessity to create a place for the cooperation between business and science, a business incubator, a centre of modern technologies etc. Therefore the idea of setting up Bialostocki Scientific and Technological Park appeared. But the following matters need to be identified: range of activities, structure of management, rules of running the Park.
