Allerød

Allerød municipality is situated on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 67 km², and has a total population of 24,000 inhibitants. Allerød Kommune has a well-developed infrastructure, its road and railway connections ensures links to the outside world. Allerød Kommune offers beautiful landscapes and a good environment with woods, fields and lakes. Allerød is a town dominated by single family houses, built between 1960 and 1975 before the oil crisis. At that time the levels of insulation of the houses were very low, thus the energy used for heating is relatively high compared to the standards for newly built houses today. The citizens are aware that it would make good sense to invest in EE-technology, but since it involves high costs, people seldom invest in energy efficiency measures because they do not know whether the investment is economically sound. At the same time, most of the houses of the city are heated by individual stokes by liquefied natural gas, which gives a great potential for an increase of the use of RES if the citizens want to invest in a new heating system.

The Municipality of Alleroed would like its citizens to have a positive experience, both economically and in the daily behaviour, regarding investments in EE and RES in small single family houses. In order to ensure that the change is permanent, the City of Alleroed would like to gain know-how on how to motivate and convince citizens to change their energy pattern towards EE and RES thinking as a natural and daily way of living.

In addition, the Municipality would like to gain knowledge on the overall feasibility of switching from a heating system depending on fossil fuels to a carbon-neutral heating system in a city with a lot of single family houses.

Furthermore, the Municipality would like to learn more about networking between local businesses in order to increase the demand of EE and RES solutions.
