Algeciras

Algeciras is a medium size city with 123.078 inhabitants, placed at the South of Andalucía, being head city in the Bay of Algeciras and the Strait of Gibraltar in the Province of Cádiz and second city in the Province in terms of population.  The city is placed between 2 Natural Parks: N. P. of the Strait of Gibraltar and  NP “de Los Alcornocales”, so it has great natural resources and landscapes. Unfortunately there are also high levels of pollution (air) coming from port activities 24/7/365 coming from petrochemistry placed in the Bay but also from port activities. The city enjoys two urban beaches: El Rinconcillo and Getares  (awarded with a blue flag) around the Bay. More than 80% of the municipal term is forest and natural area, much of it under some form of official protection. In this way, 21% of the term, about 1872 hectares, 34 belongs to the “Los Alcornocales natural park”; 27%, some 2316 hectares, 35 to the natural park of the Strait, 36 and some 58 protected hectares between the terms of Algeciras and Los Barrios belong to the natural area of ​​the Palmones River marshes.

Among its flora we find very unique biotopes such as gallery forests called locally canutos or cloud forests; These valleys conserved during the glaciations part of the European tropical flora of the Tertiary era.38 This typical flora of the Macaronesian region is today in danger of extinction due to the loss of its habitats and the anthropization of the environment. The forest in which it is preserved is mainly of the laurel type and is composed of trees and shrubs such as the Ojaranzo.

The climate of Algeciras area can be defined as temperate, transitional between the Mediterranean and the oceanic, characterized by conditions of mild and regular temperatures and by irregular and torrential rainfall with an annual average situated in the 1000 mm. Like the whole area of ​​the strait, the influence of the wind is very important; Among the prevailing winds, the east and west winds stand out, almost exclusive to the area, the temporal distribution of these is similar in winter, however in summer the east wind is the majority in general. The average humidity in the city is 80%. The thermal amplitude of the city is the lowest of all those registered in Andalusia.

The University of Cadiz have Faculties of Engineers, Nursery and Labour relations in Algeciras, and it is expected European Seas Faculty and an University Hospital by end of 2022 are located in the Campus.     

The unemployment rate is high, about 15% specially in young people, and a GDP in 2018 of 29.042€ growing since 2013.

As a “pass-by-city” there are 104 nationalities registered  between the population, up to 30% in some districts, but NGOs have countered almost 130 nationalities in some suburbs.  Algeciras is considered transnational area as there are about 15.000 cross border workers with Gibraltar.

Also, it is calculated about  52.211 migrants in 2018 get into the costs coming Maroc, Tunis and Libia, bus also from Subsahara.  In the City there are not social conflicts as population is used to this reality.
