In Aarhus, the URBACT Onstage project is helping develop innovative methods to make music a vector for social change - and inspiration from the project's city partners has been key. These are the latest news on how the initiative is progressing in this Danish town!

As demonstrative actions within the URBACT OnStage project, the Danish city of Aarhus is developint musical concepts for children of different ages. Inspired by 'Best Practice' partners from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, all concepts have in common that we meet the children in their everyday life, at the daycare center or during the school day, to be sure to reach everyone. We try to promote the teachers' teamwork with common materials and a common approach.

Our concepts are...

1. Sangskattekisten.dk - The Danish Song Treasure Box: an upgrading course to sing and play together. Primary target group: 2-5 years old

2. Flaskeposttilfremtiden.dk - Message to the future: A storytelling structure for framing creative exploration in music sessions. Our goal is to handle challenges to the children by inviting them to deal with the emotions that music awakes in them. The concept is a common foundation for the intercultural performance work performed at the Center for World Music: 8 musicians with a non-western cultural heritage work for half a year with 400 schoolchildren, aged from 10 to 12 years, two lessons a week, to prepare for a performance at the largest stage of the city. Furthermore, the concept is now being developed into a method to teach livability skills and emotional self- and group care to the school-starters.Target group: 6-12 years old

3. The making of an orchestra. As a part of our URBACT OnStage's activity in Aarhus, we implement different orchestras in schools all over the city. We are now at a stage where we are developing common models, methods and materials inspired by what we have seen visiting our OnStage city partners. That is why we are looking forward to the next visits in the spring to take home even more ideas! Target age group: 8-12

All concepts where presented to our URBACT OnStage partners a few weeks ago, and we are thankful for the new perspectives that they gave on our work. Our next step is to communicate our new slogan: Together in Music!
