2012 URBACT ANNUAL CONFERENCE: Save the date

Next URBACT Annual Conference will take place in Copenhagen on 3 and 4 December 2012. The focus of the conference will be on the good practices and results of URBACT's projects, and on findings from other bodies and European Territorial Cooperation programmes.

Urban issues are high on the European agenda. For the problems cities face – unemployment, segregation, poverty – and for the solutions they can foster, from innovation and research to culture, creativity and sustainability.  In the words of Johannes Hahn, EU commissioner for regional policy: "Cities have to be at the heart of our plans to create a Europe that is prosperous, environmentally sustainable, and where no citizen is marginalised…The development of our cities will determine the future of Europe."

URBACT, a programme jointly funded by the EU and Member States, helps hundreds of cities throughout Europe to share good practices and develop new, sustainable solutions that integrate economic, social and environmental dimensions.
 
In "Cities of tomorrow – Challenges, visions, ways forward", a report commissioned by DG Regio last year, urban experts and city-representatives highlight many of the major challenges that cities in URBACT networks are already trying to solve through sustainable and integrated urban development.

Drawing on such experiences from URBACT and beyond, the 2012 URBACT Annual Conference will gather practitioners and policy-makers who will investigate potential solutions to some of the key threats EU cities face in the years ahead. 

We will discuss:

  • Demographic decline
  • Skills and jobs
  • Active inclusion through social innovation
  • Spatial polarisation
  • Mobility and accessibility
  • Buildings and energy efficiency

The event is a chance to: 

  • investigate how EU cities can tackle the threats they face, based on examples of integrated sustainable urban development from URBACT projects and other European Territorial Cooperation programmes;
  • share experiences with other urban development practitioners, policymakers and experts in organised activities such as interactive workshops, and the "URBACT European café".


Who can take part?The conference is designed for practitioners and policy-makers involved in urban development at local, regional, national and EU level.  We welcome URBACT project partners and experts, other cities, national authorities, EU institutions, research institutions and managing authorities of operational programmes.
