Újpest

Újpest, with about 100 000 inhabitants, is one of the peripheral districts in the north of Budapest, along the Danube. It plays a gate role between the inner districts of the capital and the agglomerations. In early 20th century, innovative machinery manufacturing and the pharmaceutical industry developed and then survived World War 2. Thus, international companies such as Sanofi and General Electrics are built on the industrial traditions of Újpest.

Although the economic status of the district is better than that of other peripheral districts in Budapest, the rate of the struggling small enterprises is significantly higher and the rate of graduates of higher education is lower while the ratio of elderly people is growing. However, Újpest has the most successful district sport club of Hungary.

The Integrated Urban Development Strategy of Újpest aims at ensuring a competitive local economy and business environment, an effective community cohesion, a self-sustaining urban environment, good quality community services and a solidary society. There are approximately 100 initiatives and project plans covering the whole district area.

The project of Újpest Municipality within the URBACT Implementation Network ReGeneration is called CoGeneration. The CoGeneration project fits with several objectives of the Integrated Urban Development Strategy of Újpest, but is mostly related to the solidary society topic (support of local community life, effective social services and housing program).

The main objective of CoGeneration is to launch a pilot project that aims at transforming the residential “commie blocks” area in the centre of Újpest into an attractive, qualitative, multifuncional urban environment with a strong community life and intergenerational interactions.
